Basics on creating your Pathfinder character and extended information on what’s below can be found on the Pathfinder SRD site here.
No evil alignments please. For character ability scores, use a twenty point buy which is detailed in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook. We will be using hero points which you can read about on the SRD site here. You get one automatically to start and if you create a back story for your character you will be awarded another. Pick two traits for your character from the Pathfinders traits list. There a pretty comprehensive list here. To get the money you start with, use the “Starting Wealth” table in the Core Rulebook. Roll it up then take the amount you get if it’s greater than the average otherwise take the average.
Anything in any of the Pathfinder material published by Paizo is good to use. Avoid any classes, races, feats, etc. published by third party companies, posted in forums, etc. My reason is that I’m comfortable with the balance of the Paizo stuff but would have to dig into the details of anything outside of that which unfortunately I don’t have time to do.
As you know Rise of the Runelords is set in Varisia. If you don’t already have it, there’s a players guide that you can download from Paizo. The PDF is free. Feel free to use anything in there for your character.
On the subject of back story here are a couple of options…
- The first and obvious option is that you can ignore anything I suggest :) and cook up your character’s backstory. My only requirement is that you end of in Pitax in the River Kingdoms which is where the group will be assembling. I’ll tie you into the group somehow (but will discuss with you first.)
- The second is that you left home because <fill in a reason here> and ultimately ended up working on the river vessel the Idle Djinni captained by a fellow named Conley Murtagh. You work together with the other PCs for long enough to at least come to trust one another dealing with various issues both mundane and dangerous sailing the river. Finally you put in at the vessel’s home port of Pitax where Murtagh delivered the news that the Djinni is headed for dry dock for badly needed repairs which will put her out of commission for at least a month if not more. He’ll be paying wages owed and wishing you the best “…and if ye find ye need work a month hence, check back to see if she’s ready to sail. I’d hire you back in a Absalom minute!!!”
If you’d like to include any quirks or other flavor for your back story, that’s always a welcome advantage since it can potentially help me in my efforts to make an interesting game. Lastly, a couple of freebies bonuses for your skills due to your back story:
- Add a +1 bonus to any Knowledge skill of your choice as long as you can justify it in your back story.
- Add a +1 bonus to any other skill of your choice as long as you can justify it in your back story.
